    Hello,

I’m from team one and my classmates wrote about chapters 9 (Active Voice),11 (Conciseness),13 (Word Usage),14 (The Colon, the Dash, adn the Ellipses) ,and 15 ( Capitalization and Number Usage). I did chapter 6 (Verbs) and it really surprised me how much all the chapters interact with one another. I learned from chapter 9, the subject and the verb need to play the same roles, thus making writing more clear. I am a type of person that gives the information first and then the key points last. When I edit after I finish my writing, I go back and switch the order or even delete the information. I also learned from chapter 11 that when I write I add two words together that mean the same thing like first and foremost, which makes my writing redundant. Since I was a little girl, I had trouble spelling words correct, in chapter 13 there is a list that I’ve been doing that helps me understand and practice words. Along with spelling, I have trouble with dashes. In chapter 14, I learned that dashes can relace commas and that ellipses mean that somthing is missing. To mix up my writing, I am going to try to replace commas with dashes. Chapter 15 really surprised me because I did not know these simple rules. When writing in a percent always write down the word, not the symbol. I have always wrote down the symbol, and now I know that in my writing I need to write down the word. With spelling out the word “percent,” I also need to start spelling out a.m and p.m instead of :00. From reading my classmates summeries, I learned a lot and I hope my writing will benefit from it.

    Hello everyone,

I found it very benefical to go to the forum and look at my teammates summaries. Their examples helped me grasp the concepts.

I sometimes have difficulty deciding what pronoun should follow between and than. After reading the summary, as well as looking back at the book, I feel more confident. The important thing to keep in mind is between is a preposition therefore an objective case pronoun follows. Than is a conjunction so a subjective case pronoun follows. The parallel structure chapter pointed out that writers often switch from an adjective to a phrase or clause. When writing, I sometimes catch myself making the same mistake. This is something that I need to keep in mind while writing. I also found it helpful to review the formatting chapter. You must format your document properly. The use of white space gives the document structure.

    Have a good day,

    Kelly Sefcik

    Hello,

I also found it very helpful to read on what my other teammates learned from their chapters. I enjoyed seeing their examples to better understand the subject. I felt like this book can really help with somethings that I may get confused about. The thing I have the most difficulty with is my word usage. I sometimes use the wrong type of word on somewhere, when it should realy be a different word.

In editing my own papers I have started noticing my mispelled words more and more. I also tend to add in little words that are not needed, empty words. When I edit my own papers I find myslef taking out a lot actually, but my paper sounds much better after I do. I think that this has really sharpened my skills of writing.

    Best of Luck,

    Brittany DeWell

  4. Brianne Wischman says:

    Hello,

I learned a lot more doing our forums this way than I ever have. We are able to read about all the different chapters. These chapters consist of information on how to proofread and edit our papers. Many of the chapters deal with more than just one subject also. Usually when we do forums, we can only read over one topic. This allowed us to see all the different topics and what people have trouble with.

I chose to do my forum over chapter five because I have always had trouble with semicolons. This chapter provided me with a lot of answers and examples. I love the fact that there are so many examples throughout the chapters. I was also able to go through and learn more about verbs, capitalization and number usage. My team members provided me with useful information that taught me a lot.

I am taking these principles and putting them in my paper at the moment. I have been able to use semicolons and proofread more effectively. This book and this weeks assignment has provided me with a lot of information. If I ever have trouble with these things, I am able to look back in the forums.

    Thank you,

    Brianne Wischman

  5. Cristina Toma says:

    Hello,

I thought this week’s assignment to be very beneficial. It was way easier to read everyone’s forum postings when they were all different. Usually, the forum postings are a little boring because all the postings are about the same thing even though everyone puts their spins on them. I do like reading the same topic explainations from different point of views because you learn a little bit more from every posting. However, this week I got to learn all little bit of everything from every one of my teammates.

Currently, I am writing a paper for one of my education classes, and I am using every last bit of information that my teammates have provided me with. I learned a little bit about modifers, semicolons, verbs, colons, and numbering. I am trying to use everything that my teammates provided me with to enhance my paper and make it more interesting for my teacher to read. This assignment really was helpful! =)

    Thank you,

    Cristina Toma

  6. Paige Hickenbottom says:

    Hello Class,

I’m from team two and I read Chapter 15 about capitalization. This chapter really helped me understand what needs to be capitalized and what should just be left alone. By reading this chapter, It’ll help me improve my writing in the near future and for the rest of my life when writing professionally.

I agree that this weeks postings were better and different. We were able to read different postings from different chapters instead of the same stuff over and over that our entire team read. By reading different chapters from our teams postings were more beneficial to me and I’m sure it helped my teammates. I look at it as of reading all those different chapters from my teammates instead of reading all the chapters myself. We each summarize them and help eachother out in a better and quicker way.

This assignment was helpful and It’ll help me and put the information to use in my writing. This will only make me a better writer for my future and benefit me.

    Thank you,

    Paige Hickenbottom

  7. Jennifer Aloia says:

    Hello Class,

I really enjoyed this activity this week! It was surprising how much I missed when I read the chapters in the very beginning. When the chapters were first assigned to read, I thought I grasped what they were saying. But after reading my teammates’ summarizations, I found myself grasping the concepts of the chapters so much more than when I read them the first time.

The one thing that I really liked was all the examples my teammates posted in their forums. I think it made applying the concepts so much more realistic. As for my own summarization, I found myself diving deeper in to the chapter than I originally had. It helped me to realize the mistakes I have been making in my own writing and how to fix those mistakes.

All in all, this assignment was very beneficial and I really enjoyed doing it!

    Thank You,

    Jennifer Aloia

  8. Jennifer Johnson says:

    Hello Class,

I’m from Team 2. This week was nice because a differenct perspective always brings new insight. My teammates covered chapters: 6 Verb, 15 Capitalization, 11 Conciseness, 16 Apostrophes, Hyphens, Quatation Marks, and 8 Modifiers. Jasalin summed up the verb chapter nicely. I was able to learn new information, which when using verbs is always helpful. I still have troubles keeping my tenses the same but have been proofreading all my writings so I can improve my verb usage.

The capitalization chapter will be helpful for an upcoming paper I have due in another class. It is difficult sometimes to determine when things should be capitalized. So being able to distinguis between proper nouns and common nouns will be useful. I liked the conciseness chapter when we originally covered it. I usually write with filler information to help with longer papers. In the business world I can see how conciseness would be viewed as efficiency and greatly appreciated by others who may be very busy in their daily schedules.

Chapter 16 is a informative chapter. No matter how much I write, it is always important to remember how to use certain punctuation correctly. I do not use hyphens regularly, but the information about apostrophes is helpful. It seems like most of this should be a review but it is suprising how much I am still able to learn. The modifier chapter, to me, is one of the best. When reading the incorrect sentences, I feel that is a way I might word the sentence. When you read what the corrected version is, it is understandable why the modifier makes a difference.

Thank you everyone for summarizing your chapters so well.

    Until next week,

    Jennifer Johnson

  9. Amber Manzella says:

    Hello Class,

This assignment has shown me that I don’t think I can ever be a perfectionist in writing. I’m not saying I’m discouraged, but with all the rules and things to memorize on how to use terms and formats, it’s highly unlikely of me to not make mistakes.

However this assignment has brought site to me of all the rules. So now I should always edit and I’ll be reminded of all the things that I’ve learned throughout the chapters and be able to referr back when I feel that something is not sounding right.

I believe that all the chapters my teammates covered were benefitical. They’re all cruical elements in English writing and add on to each other. Like I said, I will make sure I always keep my books for references, because I know I’ll need them!

    Thank you,

    Amber Manzella

  10. Andrea Salazar says:

    Hello Class,

I felt that this week was very helpful. I enjoyed reading my other teammates summaries on the chapters that they picked. The examples in their summaries helped me to understand what they were trying to explain. I actually went to each summary and commented on each one. Force of habit I guess! I told a couple of my teammates that I am more of a visual learning, so the examples in their summaries really helps me to understand it better.

I did my summary on chapter 12, Formatting. I wanted to do that chapter because I feel that the formatting of my e-mails and letters are more professional looking. I feel more confident in my writing because I feel that my formatting makes it easier for the reader to understand. I also feel very confindent about the dirct and indirect messages. I feel myself trying to make sure I make my point clear and not confusing by putting in words that really don’t need to be in the message.

I can actually say that I am feeling more confident in my writting for the first time in my life. It is a good feeling. I know I still have some things that I need to work and improve on. I hope everyone is feeling the same way I am.

    Have a great weekend everyone,

    Andrea Salazar

  11. Abby Counter says:

    Hello everyone,

My team is team one. This week, we did the following chapters: Chapter 14-Colons, Chapter 6-Verbs, Chapter 11-Conciseness, Chapter 9-Active Voice, Chapter 13-Word Usage, Chapter 15-Capitalization and Number Usage, and Chapter 4-Comma Rules. There are several things that I have learned from our postings; I will apply them to my career.

Chapter 14 reminded me that it is alright to use dashes and ellipses. I use them in my text messages all the time, but did not realize it is appropriate to use them professionally as well. Chapter 6 taught me that using the active voice with verbs can make our writing more clear. It also taught me that verbs can express mood. I am going to remember this while editing, as this can change the mood of a writing project. I posted about Chapter 11 because I have always struggled with conciseness. I have been applying as much as I can to my everyday work communications. It has helped me significantly. Chapter 9 taught me that the verb and subject play their designated roles. Practicing editing skills helps our sentences stay strong and clear. Chapter 13 taught me not to use a pronoun when the reader can’t tell whom/what it refers to. Also, spelling is something that we must always be aware of. Chapter 15 taught me that numbers one through ten should be spelled out, fractions should be written as words, and weights, measures and other types of dimensions should be figures. Chapter 4 taught me that when in doubt, leave the comma out. Previous to learning Chapter 4, I have used a comma as a pause. Now I know that there are actually 12 comma rules.

The forums have helped me improve my professional writing skills. I find it very helpful to read my class’s forums. It seems like we chose to write about what we individually struggle with. This is very helpful to us all.

Hope everyone is learning as much as I am.

    Sincerely,

    Abby

  12. James Bastin says:

    Hello Class,

I am from team 1 and am finding this class insightful and helpful. I have enjoyed reading my teammates postings every week. Their examples help me to clear my head and collect my thoughts and ideas. There have been a couple assignments that I have found guidance through my teammates postings.

Our team summarized chapters 9,11, and 13-15. I found the colon and semi-colon chapters the most helpful. Growing up I never could understand the purpose and rules behind these punctuation’s. After reading these chapters, I found the rules were not as complicated as I once believed. The other chapters were not as hard; however, they did brush up my skills learned from high school.

I have applied many of the rules learned from this course into my nursing classes. I have wrote numerous papers and found myself re-doing them because of the rules I have learned in this class. Professor Young is an excellent teacher and an even smarter woman. I hope that everyone passes not just class but all of your classes.

    Sincerely,

    James Bastin

  13. Shelbee Peterson says:

    Hello Class

This week’s forum was interesting. With each person in the team doing a different chapter, it was a mass review on everything. It was very helpful to refresh my memory on each topic.

The review on the colon, dash, and ellipse was useful. I rarely use the dash because I’m not very clear on what the correct usage of it is. The colon I am okay with using. I knew ellipse had three periods but did not know that there was a possibility of using a fourth. I learned in the capitalization and number usage forum that for numbers under ten write it out and for double digit numbers use the figures. When and why to use the number figure or when to write them out has always confused me, and I was never sure of which to use when. This review really helped in clearing that up for me.

All the reviews helped clear up something I was unsure about. Reading about something different each time was a nice change.

    Hope everyone had a week.

    Shelbee Peterson

  14. Karina Fonseca says:

    Hi classmates,

I’m from team number one and we summarized chapters 6, 9, 11, and 13-15. I decided to summarize Chapter 15 since it was covering the topics of capitalization and number usage. At first I thought the rules describing their proper usage were going to be very elementary; nevertheless, to my surprise it was the first time I had heard about some of them. Some of those surprising rules were: writing a number out if less than 10, writing out the word percent, and using a.m., p.m., or o’clock instead of :00. Considering capitalization and number usage are things I use on day to day bases, I am now more aware of how to write correctly. For example, when replying back to my sister’s coach on what time fit my schedule best, even the coach had misused how to properly write out a time slot and politely corrected her by replying back using one of the number rules.

In reference to the chapters my team members summarized, they were all very insightful. Yet I found chapter 14 discussing colons, dashes, and ellipses the most useful since I didn’t have the slightest clue in how to properly use them. After learning more about their rules I have now become more comfortable using them sparsely throughout my writings.

    Hope everyone enjoys their weekend.

    Sincerely,

    Karina Fonseca

  15. Brittany Komenda says:

    Hello Class,

This week’s review was very helpful. I realized that I needed to go back over some of the rules again, and that I will have to keep going back over the rules until I have mastered them. I liked this week’s forum, because my team introduced the rules with examples. Usually, we sum up the chapter and give less examples.

The chapter on word usage was helpful, because I tend to mix up certain words. Jennifer gave the example of affect and effect. I would struggle with the correct way to use effect/affect, and now I know that affect means to influence and effect means result. Reviewing verb usage and capitalization was helpful, because there are a few rules I tend to forget. With capitalization, I always forget when you should capitalize aunt and uncle.

The chapters I use less often are Chapter 8 (modifiers) and Chapter 16 (Apostrophes, Hyphens, and Quotation Marks). It was helpful going over Chapter 16, because I forget the proper way to use apostrophes. I rarely use hyphens, so it is nice to know the rules for when I do. I use quotation marks the most, so learning the different rules will be very helpful in the future.

I enjoyed reading all of the different forums this week and reviewing the chapters.

    Talk to you soon,

    Brittany

  16. Christine Engle says:

    Hello class,

I really enjoyed this weeks assignment. Re-touching on past topics and refreshing things we may have forgotten over the weeks was great! I also really like reading over the summaries and topics my fellow teammates found important in their chapters.

Particularly, I’ve had past problems with word usage and also quotes and hyphens. Working through and reading the content of sentences has helped a lot with the usage. For example, words like affect and effect use to confuse me in writing. As for hyphens and quotes, reading through the chapter and summarizing for my team was a perfect way to finally get the rules straight. Comma rules was also a good review. I usually feel pretty comfortable with commas, but certain situations still catch me off guard. I tend to use commas at times when they’re not necessary, but it’s something I’m working on in my writing.

This assignment was a welcome change from the norm, and a nice way to refresh on some mechanics of writing.

    All the best,

    Christine E.

  17. Sarah Morariu says:

    Hi Class,
I am a part of team 2, and this week I learned a lot from my teammates. Topics covered included conciseness, word usage, pronouns, quotation marks, apostrophes, hyphens, and capitalization. The main thing I took away from reading about conciseness is that less is more. I commonly try to use large words and jargon throughout my writing to seem more professional, and I learned that I do not need to do that. Cutting out opinion and personal beliefs while using simple writing is enough to be concise. The chapter about word usage was also interesting. I found it interesting that many words we use are not considered “real words.” Also, I thought that the tip about boosting your vocabulary was great, and I plan to do so. Pronouns were fascinating to read about, as well. I learned that pronouns are classified into four types (subjective, objective, possessive, and reflexive), and that the biggest mistake when using pronouns is hyper-correction. This is when I is used instead of when me should be used.
The next topic included quotation marks, apostrophes, and hyphens. I learned quotation marks are used to insert a direct quote, but to also identify technical terms and to use words humorously or to imply irony or sarcasm. Apostrophes are used with contractions and possessive terms, while hyphens are used to divide words or form a prefix or a suffix. All three subtopics enhance the credibility and quality of writing. The section on capitalization was also neat to read about. The main point was that many errors of capitalization are because of text messages and emails. Using capitalization is important on proper nouns and the first word of each sentence.
Overall, I enjoyed the assignment’s layout this week. I learned a lot and liked everyone’s summary about their chapters.

    Thanks,
    Sarah

  18. Daniel Prentoski says:

    Hello class,

Team three has provided summaries over how to use colons, dashes and ellipses, explained the different forms of verbs, how to capitalize and used numbers in sentences and what the meaning of conciseness is in a sentence.
It is easier to understand now that my classmate has explained the proper usage of colon and dashes, as well as what ellipses were since I have never heard of those before. Colon can be used when a sentence follows, such a list of items you are describing or specific instructions you are giving. I have never used dashes in my writing and even the explanations did not help me understand on how to used them. Ellipses , too, are rarely used in my writing.
Verbs can be regular and irregular. I remember when I first started learning how to speak English, I always struggled with the irregular form of some of these verbs. Regulars were easy to remember, since they end in -ed. Irregular, on the other hand, was a challenge. I have mastered it know with practice. Verbs also express mood and there are three types: indicative, imperative, and subjunctive. Indicative emphasizes a straight to the point message, imperative are exclamatory and express commands or requests, and lastly, subjunctive expresses wishes and recommendations.
Capitalization and number usage was another concept explained. I have never had any problems with how to correctly capitalize a word or how to use a number in a sentence. Semicolons are used when two independent clauses need to separated. I do not really used semicolons in my writings, but it was helpful to read how and hen to use them correctly.
Conciseness in a sentence is important to get your message across. Writing in simple terms without using irrelevant info, redundant modifiers and outdated phrases, each sentence is easier to read and understand the message behind it.
Each summary has been very helpful and each piece of info I have learned will help me tune and improve my editing skills.

    Thanks,
    Daniel

  19. Kari Doorn says:

    Hello,

I am Kari and a part of team one. I found the summaries to be very helpful. I think that being a busy student it is very nice to have a quick reference that I can look at and get the information I need. I think the chapter summaries that helped me the most were conciseness and comma rules. Commas are sometimes diffucult and it is hard to remember all the rules sometimes. Also, conciseness is important in writing. This helps you to get your point across in the most direct and clear way. The rules I now try to pay most attention to are leaving out pointless nouns and redundant statements. I have learned that you do not need to use huge words to sound smart. I now try to write short, sweet, and direct messages. Also, now I pay attention to where I place my comma’s and always use them in introductions of people and when I want to leave a word out. These tools have overall helped me when I write to my professors and when I apply for interviews. I usually feel pretty comfortable in my writing when i set my mind to it and think about what I really want to say.

This was a helpful assignment and I will be using these references for a quick look when I get stuck in my writing in the future.

    Thanks,

    Kari

  20. Jessica Schiessle says:

    Good evening class,

Reading and writing forums are beneficial for me. Writing about chapters makes me key into important information and is a way for me to remember what I read. After reading my teams forums and responses to my forum, I gain even more knowledge about what I read. Proofreading and editing your response is important because if you have a few mistakes, the audience may not understand the point you are trying to cross. Sometimes after I write my weekly forum, I am too tired to go back and edit. However, I have learned it’s important to so nothing is misunderstood.

Every week after our reading, I bring what I’ve learned into my forum. However, as the weeks go by, I forget about the beginning chapters and fail to correct my writing. Printing out the forums and taking notes while I read has helped me carry out the correct writing form in my forums. I plan on keeping them with me so when I have to write a paper I can refer back to them as often as I need to.

This weeks forum was exciting since we all wrote about a different chapter. I got more out of this week than any other. The first interesting forum was the one about word usage. This can be difficult for me because similar words easily confuse me. It took me years to figure out the difference between then and than. Also, the definitions of root words were new to me. I knew some of them, but others I didn’t know were even root words. Reading about parallel structure was also helpful for me. I always use useless phrases in place of adjectives and often misuse word tense.

    Have a good night,

    Jessica Schiessle

  21. Debbie Kaplan says:

    Hi Class,

My name is Debbie and I am a part of Team 2. I am going to sound cliche here but I have to say that I have learned so much from this class and from the text. I enjoy writing and always thought that it was something that I was pretty good at doing. Well, I have learned so much from all the refreshers that this class has provided.

I tend to have the most trouble with commas. In fact, I have referenced our text often since starting this class when writing. I think one of the most useful rules that I have learned is that when in doubt, you should leave the comma out. I, in fact, have always done the opposite and therefore I “overcomma.” Word usage has never been a big problem for me, but I greatly appreciated the refresher of information that I’ve gotten in so many different areas, including this topic.

Semi-colons are another area where I feel that I needed work. I do not find that I have had many instances where using a semi-colon was necessary since the reading, but I know that I will be referencing this section as well.

One thing that i have really enjoyed learning is about keeping your writing concise. I am guilty of being too wordy. I was so interested to see that this could actually make my writing less effective. I think that this is the one area that I have to work at the hardest.

    Have a good night,
    Debbie

  22. Sparkle Robinson says:

    Hello Everyone,

I enjoyed what we did in the forums this week. I think it was a great idea to have everyone summarize a chapter from the book. It was helpful because everyone summarizes what they think is important and also what they may find difficult. Everyone else gets a better understanding by reading what others are struggling with. I know it helps me to read the summaries in the forum.

I have learned that it is difficult to edit your work, but it has to be done. Editing and revising consists of really opening up to change in your writing. It is always good to read, read, and reread any correspondence before you send it, because more than likely some changes will need to be made.

Some changes that may need to be made is making sure sentences are in the active voice and not the passive voice. The active voice will guarantee that a sentence is clear in all aspects. You will know the real subject and what they are doing, and there will not be a question of who is doing what. Another thing that you may have to look at when editing is to make sure you use parallel structure. I learned that when a sentence has parallel structure, all nouns, adjectives, phrases, and clauses should have the same grammatical form.

I believe that I am seeing great results in my writing. I always find myself referring back to the book because it is so helpful. Taking this class makes you want to write correctly. I actually think more now when writing, making sure that I follow the rules. I know that I still have a lot to learn, but so far everything I am learning about commas, semi colons, and even personality traits, is helping tremendously.

I hope everyone is doing a great job and taking in everything that you are reading. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

    Sparkle Robinson

  23. Naumce Prentoski says:

I really enjoyed doing this activity because it was very interesting and informative. It helped me understand more chapters at once rather than reading about the same chapter over and over again.

My team covered topics in word usage, pronouns, active voice, parallel structure, formatting, and the proper use of colon, the dash, and the ellipses. After reading these summaries, I felt more confident about the topics. Formatting is an important tool in writing and I now know how to correctly format a business document. Word usage was also useful for me because I sometimes misspell a word because I don’t pay attention to all the letters in the word and I might write advise instead of advice. Active voice is also important because it makes the writing easier to understand because you can identify the subject. I hope everyone learned as much as I did from doing this activity.

    Have a nice day,

    Naumce Prentoski

  24. Mollie Novak says:

    Good evening,

I am from group two in W231. I have found that I really like this class. It has proven itself to be quite a challenge, but I have learned so much information. Most of the information was stuff that I thought I already knew, but I was totally wrong. I will be honest, I think responding to every group members post in the forum is a bit too much, but I do really enjoy the forums themselves. I feel that posting in them really gives me insight because I am really trying hard to summarize the chapter for my other team members.

I had troubles in a couple of areas throughout the book, but to be completely honest, after I reread the chapter I usually understood the material. The assignments and chapter reviews in the book were very helpful as well, and I used them as examples in my forums quite often. I liked that we got to summarize a different chapter each this time. It really spiced things up and didn’t seem so repetitive. All in all, I think this was a great learning lesson!

    Have a good weekend,

    Mollie

  25. Ken Davis says:

    Hello Team 1,

A team that feeds off of brilliances is a satisfying appetite for knowledge. I have to thank our instructor, her talent for writing and teaching, is beyond excellences. I am, thankful to be coached by the best and grateful to be part of a team that self-absorbs the writing task with such great pride.

This assignment has truly been remarkable and most notable. My teammates, I congratulate you for sharing your learning experiences. Remember teammates,” determinations to learn produces influence and influence produces knowledge”. (Quote, originally wrote by me)!

Ok, let’s take a blast, from my teammates past. Read their testimonies. Karina wrote. Surprising rules were: writing a number out if less than 10, writing out the word percent, and using a.m., p.m. or o’clock instead of: 00. And James wrote. Growing up I never could understand the purpose and rules behind these punctuation’s. After reading the chapters, I found the rules were not as complicated as I once believed. And Abby wrote, Chapter 6 taught me that using the active voice with verbs can make our writing more clear. And I wrote, before reading chapter 4, I did not know the 12 rules that correspond with the comma. The pause rule was my, technical guessing game. I learned, when writing complicated sentences, consider simplify the sentence by breaking down the information into more than one sentence. “If you don’t know the rule, leave it out”!

I believed that, team 1 is working together and helping each other to become better writers.

Thank you from a proud member,

    Ken Davis

  26. Stephanie Jensen says:

    Hi everyone,

My name is Stephanie, and I’m a part of team 2. When I started this class I didn’t think that it was going to have this much of an impact on my life. I never thought of myself as a bad writer. I was just very unaware of the grammar rules and punctuation rules that make a writing piece flawless.
This class is really teaching me a lot in both of those areas. I still need extra practice in comma and semicolon rules though. Reading about how my other teammates summarize the chapters is helpful. It’s interesting to see what main points others pick out from the same chapter.
The text books that go along with this class are definitely helpful. I will be keeping these books and referencing them throughout the rest of my college career and beyond. I really like the way they are written. The examples are great and both books are very reader friendly.

    Have a good weekend,

    Stephanie

    Hello Class!

I am from Team 3. I enjoy this class very much. English is a tough language. My friend writes stories, and she has me edit them for spelling errors. However, this week, I misspelt my whole title! The worst part is that I proofread before I submitted. Sometimes, catching even big mistakes are hard. This book is great. It’s easy to follow, and I am learning things I thought I knew that I really didn’t. I like posting in the forums. I usually just define things when taking notes for myself, but I have found I grasp more when I write a summary and use examples. I read my teammate’s responses, but it gets tedious posting in every one. Sometimes, there’s not much to say other than “Thanks for the summary!” Overall, my team does a great job with communicating. They all seem to be striving to do their best!

One Chapter that I needed to brush up on was Chapter 15. Writing numbers can get tricky. The general rule is to write numbers under ten as words, but over ten as figures. However, if the number begins the sentence, you should spell it out, even though it may be a number over ten. The one thing I know I need to work on in my writing is creating a clear message. Chapter 8 covers modifiers. It cleared up the differences between action and linking verbs, I feel like I always use fillers such as “umm” when speaking! I have been working on that when I speak!

    Thank you,

    Lauren Sergent

    Hello Class

I have learned alot from doing the forum and being able to read other people perspective on the chapters. There have been some times where I did not really understand what I was reading, but was able to read in the forum what another student thought about it and was able to relate. I have never had a class where you had to connect with class mates like this, and I do like it. It is very helpful.

    Best Regards

    Hello Class,

Not to seem to much like a copy cat but I also really enjoyed this assignment. To me it always great to see what others think. I am a really big fan of these blog posting for that reason. It is sometime harder to post something that is a fresh ideal when so many are writing in at one time. However, to me that is where the fun is. It makes me think outside the box and try harder in my own postings. It is great to see what everyone has learned and taken away from this class.

Please do not get me wrong, Team 1 is absolutly some of the best students I have had the chance to interact with. There are a few in paticular that if you go and look at their posting, you will be wowed. They leave very little room for comments because they do such a great job of being indepth and covering the chapters in great detail, that all I can do is agree.

So, to talk about the things that I have learned would take all night. I have never been extremly comfortable with writing. This class has shown me ways to make writing easier. I think that is the most consise way I can put it.

    Thanks,

    Larry

    Hi class
I learned a lot this week from reading all the summaries. I really feel like this class is making me become a better writer. The skills i am learning in this class will help me as I write in the future.
I learned a lot from chapter 7 about pronouns. I always get confused when it comes to pronouns so I thought it would be a good chapter to look at again. A pronoun is a word that is used in place of another word or pronoun. Pronouns can be divided into 4 cases. The cases are subjective, objective, possessive, and reflexive.
In chapter 9 I learned about active voice. Active voice makes writing more clear and concise. A lot of time I have a hard time understanding what I read, and I found out this is because the writing is in passive voice. This makes me always want to write in active voice so it can be easier to understand.
Chapter 12 talks about direct message cd indirect message. I think this can be very useful information for me in the future when I am writing letters. A direct message gets to the point right away whereas an indirect message states the purpose in an indirect way.

    Hello Class,

Chapter 14 was helpful because I was not confident or comfortable using the colon, dash, and ellipsis. I avoided using these puntuations because I was not sure when to apply them. After going over chapter 14, I feel confident using them. In fact, it turned out to be much less painful than I remember. I am glad that I chose this chapter. I will be using these punctuations in future writings.

    Hi Class,

Sorry I am a day late with my posting, I was posting in my teams forum until I went back to read what was expected of us for this week, and I noticed that I was the only one posting in my teams forum. Forgive me. I have learned from reading my teams forums that we are really trying to understand colons, commas and semicolons.

I am trying to understand the difference between the three and know when to use them. I have noticed that all of the teams have the same probably with the colons, commas and semicolons. I have enjoyed reading through all of the posting, because I have grasp the concept on how to used the colons, commas and semicolons.

I will use my book to make sure that I use these appropiate when I have to use them. I know I probably will still use these inappropiate but I will try my best to used them as the book states.

I enjoy this class because I learn new things all the time that I had know Idea about. One of my team mates talked about the numbers. That any number under 10 should be type or wrote out, this was real shocking to know. I am glad that my team mate posted this because I use to wonder about if I should just write the number or write it out. Writing the number is just quick and easy but I have learned the rule for this. Thanks to one of my team mates.

    Everyone have a great day.

    Hello,

I apologize for posting late! My laptop was messed up and I didn’t have access to another one!

From reading my teams postings I have learned a lot. My team discussed word usage, verbs, capitalization, conciseness, modifiers, apostrophes, hyphens, and quotation marks.

A lot of the stuff discussed I was already familiar with. It was a nice refresher though! I have been cutting out a lot of conciseness in my writing, I used to use redundant pairings. Modifiers are the most difficult thing for me to remember. After reading what was written about them, it will be a lot easier to use them.

    Have a great day,

    Jasalin
